The Bulldog on Our Lawn
If you have driven past 33 Old Bedford Road, you have already met him: a life-size bulldog in teal scrubs and a stethoscope, keeping watch over the front lawn.
He is part of Bulldogs of Bedford, a community art project run through Bedford High School. The bulldog is the school’s mascot, and the project turns that mascot into a town-wide gallery.
The way it works is simple. A local business or family sponsors a blank fiberglass bulldog. An artist paints it to a theme of the sponsor’s choosing, so no two are alike. The finished statue then goes on display where the sponsor lives or works, and each one is added to a map so residents can tour them.
The proceeds go to Bedford High School, and sponsorships are tax-deductible. That is the part that matters most to us. It is a fundraiser for the town’s own students, dressed up as a scavenger hunt.
Ours wears scrubs
Our bulldog is painted in hospital teal, with a stethoscope around his neck, paw prints across his back, and our name along his side. He is not hard to spot, and he is a useful landmark: if you are looking for us for the first time, look for the bulldog.
We have been at this address since 1953. Sponsoring a bulldog was a small way of saying that we intend to stay, and that an independent practice is part of the town it serves rather than a branch of something headquartered elsewhere.
